Thor Steiger

'Twisted Energy' by Thor Steiger offers some of the most refined EDM material we've encountered this year - a sure sign that a new power has arisen behind the console.

From its seething first bars, lead song 'Ibiza' from Thor Steiger's new EP 'Twisted Energy' announces itself as authoritative, all-consuming and inexorably dance-inducing. These are the hallmarks of great EDM jams in general, but this hardworking Las Vegas musician has somehow managed to condense the already fire-hardened principles of the genre into something capable of nuclear fusion - no mean trick given the ultra-competitive landscape of his profession. Comprehensively educated by the rigors of major engagements, Steiger has the practiced mental-digital dexterity needed to masterfully acquit the visual component of the role, which is at least half of the appeal of today's top DJs. Independent reporter Lily Clark recently caught up with the genial musician to talk about his growing reputation as a producer and DJ, the arduous personal and creative challenges that beset him along the way to professional recognition, and his hopes and ambitions for the coming days.

LILY: Let's just get this out in the open - What is the craziest thing that has happened to you in your music career?
THOR: The craziest experience in my DJ career would be a three day birthday party for one of my best friends - and the person who helped me find my calling as a DJ - Tiffani Neilson. It was during this never-ending celebration that I gained my DJ stamina. The first day began as a red carpet house party with everyone arrayed in superhero costumes. I was dressed as king of the house. From there we moved the party to the Palms Fantasy Tower SkyVilla, where there was another red carpet and a view you wouldn't believe. The following night they upgraded the suite because they just could not get enough of my music. We moved into the ultimate suite available at the Palms, the former Hugh Hefner two story SkyVilla with the pool that looks over the Strip. I'll just say that it was pretty hard-core, even for Las Vegas.

LILY: Your song ‘Ibiza' is receiving a positive listener response on radio. What was your initial reaction when you first heard your song playing on radio?
THOR: Gratitude. I have worked so hard and it is amazing to see one of my songs achieve that kind of recognition.

LILY: What was the inspiration behind your debut radio single?
THOR: I wanted a song that was international in scope and appealing to all who want to party. Ibiza attracts a global audience and has that reputation so it serves the theme.

LILY: It is often said that great art arises from difficult experience. Is there something in your life experience thus far that you would describe as the ‘catalyst’ or ‘fuel’ for your desire to create music?
THOR: I have seen so many ups and downs. I don't think there are too many situations that I cannot overcome because of the wisdom I've acquired along the way. Because of that this is the best thing I have ever had the privilege to pursue. I feel that at this point in my career it is really about proving my talents to all the people that doubted me. I know that I can be a top DJ and I am going to prove it to the world.

LILY: How would you characterize yourself as an artist/musician? (Ex. Down-to-earth, serious, fun-loving, complicated…)
THOR: As a musician I consider myself an original thinker. I tend to be emotional, energetic, and a perfectionist. This complicates things, but usually in a fun way.

LILY: What has your experience been like working with the other people on your team?
THOR: Exciting. Very exciting. I never realized that my skills would grow to such an extent that I could circulate among such respected people in the music industry.

LILY: Did you come from a musical background? Are there other musicians in your family?
THOR: My mom loves percussion. At fifty years of age she decided to become a drummer!

LILY: What do you find most rewarding about being an artist? What do you find most challenging?
THOR: The fans. The fans. It's all about the fans.

LILY: Who are your role models in music?
THOR: Von Ukuf because he taught me everything I know about music. He is the only one who dared to try. Kaskade's music has energy and elegance to it. R3hab, because of the dirty bigness to what he slams. Carl Cox because of the drive. Adam Bayer for the deep dark drums he can sink into your head. Manny In the Mix, who has been a mentor and great friend. Then there's the original B Boy 360; he was on tour for six years with C&C Music Factory. He was the first person to see me for who I am and what I want in this biz. He was also the first person to buy my CD!

LILY: Describe your best or most memorable performance.
THOR: In Miami for WMC I experienced music on new levels and expanded my mind to new creative frontiers. It made my music career seem much more real.

LILY: What advice would you give to young, aspiring artists out there who are unsure and need guidance?
THOR: Practice, practice, practice. Always approach learning as if you could never know enough. And always try new things.

LILY: What's next for you as an artist? Is there a new single in the works? If so, what can you tell us about it?
THOR: I plan to play some huge festivals and events, dates soon to be released. I am collaborating with several artists including some in the hip-hop genre. The new tracks I am currently producing with City Pack Wolves are going to be epic, especially since Sammy Sam - formerly of Public Enemy - will be involved.

LILY: Thank you so much Thor for taking the time to share your history with us. You are an obviously gifted and committed musician and we anticipate hearing great things about your career in the coming year!
