Los Hermos Band

They're original, quirky and straight out of Helsinki, Finland. After years of hard work, Los Hermos Band's unusual synth rock sound is finally catching the attention of global audiences.

The old axiom that 'patience will achieve more than force' seems particularly true in the case of Riku Turpeinen and Los Hermos Band. A singer-songwriter and frontman for Los Hermos Band out of Helsinki, Riku has been making music for most of his life. Los Hermos Band has been together for over twenty years, playing their unique brand of synth pop rock music in English. Though they have performed at some large events, such as a show at Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, gaining the attention of broader audiences had proven to be a challanege. But when their debut single 'Studio Life' began popping up on radio a few months ago, listeners began to take notice. Whether it is their uncoventional origins, musicianship or songwriting that is winning over audiences is not yet clear. What is clear is that staying true to themselves through the many years has begun to pay off. The buzz around this Finnish ensemble continues to grow, even as they plan their first U.S. show in New York for the end of 2015. Reporter Lily Clark recently interviewed Riku Turpeinen of Los Hermos Band to learn more about this intriguing artist and what we can expect from the group in the near future.

LILY: When did you first discover your love of music?
RIKU: I was three years old when I discovered my love of music and it is still going strong.

LILY: Your song 'Studio Life' has received a positive listener response on radio. What was your initial reaction when you first heard your song playing on radio?
RIKU: It's very surprising having my song in so many stations. I love it!

LILY: What was the inspiration behind your debut radio single?
RIKU: The idea is from my childhood and I just finished it. Isn’t that awesome?

LILY: Would you say that the mood of your other songs is in the same vein as your debut radio single?
RIKU: The mood is the same but I am creative in many other ways and in song-writing style too.

LILY: How would you characterize yourself as a musician? (ex. Down-to-earth, serious, fun-loving...)
RIKU: I would say that I'm easy to relate to and fun-loving, yet focused.

LILY: Did you come from a musical background? Are there other musicians in your family?
RIKU: Yes, I am from a musical background. There are many relatives involved with music in their own ways, all more or less serious and professional.

LILY: What do you find most rewarding about being a musician? What do you find most challenging?
RIKU: Most rewarding is going forward in my career like I am at the moment and getting lots of new fans. Most challenging on the other hand is bringing something new in my music, although I have always been able to find new inspiration.

LILY: Who are your role models in music?
RIKU: Hanoi Rocks, Elvis Presley and Suzanne Vega just to mention few.

LILY: Describe your best or most memorable performance.
RIKU: It was at Finlandia House in Helsinki, Finland in front of over a thousand people. Our Akademia award-winning hit single ‘Studio Life’ was the other one of two songs performed there. The crowd went crazy over us!

LILY: Do you have a music video for your hit single? If so, what can you tell us about it?
RIKU: We're working on it. Should be ready in the coming months.

LILY: What advice would you give to young, aspiring musicians out there who are unsure and need guidance?
RIKU: Forget being unsure and head to the top! :) It may not be easy but hard work always does get paid.

LILY: What's next for you as an artist? Is there a new single in the works? If so, what can you tell us about it?
RIKU: I got my pocket full of great hit tunes ready to be shown to a larger audience- ballads, midtempo, rock, all kinds of songs. I look forward to having people listen to them!

LILY: Excellent! I look forward to hearing them. Thanks for taking time out to share your story with me. I wish you good luck and continued success!
