LB Dat

White hot LB Dat is gunning up the global radio charts with his hit rap song ‘I Know You See Me'. Masterfully staged lyrics and machine gun beatmaking are this outrageously skilled rapper's weapons of mass influence.

It's easy to forget how old hip-hop really is. Arising from NYC block parties back in seventies, it predates electronica, grunge and boy bands. When a music genre becomes this mature it tends to accelerate certain artists based on an almost invisible credibility filter rather than board-room formulas for market-making. In other words, the best upcoming rappers nowadays just have a certain intrinsic legitimacy that can't be learned or assembled from other creative aptitudes (anyone remember Will Smith's rap career?) LB Dat is one of the rare contenders for hip-hop fame who can demonstrate that authority on every track he devises. Listen to 'I Know You See Me' and seriously ask yourself whether Jay Z or Fifty could do it harder. He belongs to their world and will arrive there before long, it's easy to believe. Reporter Lauren Thompson recently caught up with the man to learn more about his growing reputation as a bold but clever tactician who crushes hip-hop impostors like a crazed paramilitary chief.

LAUREN: When did you first discover your love of music?
LB DAT: I discovered my love for music around the age of five listening to my older sibling playing music and scratching on his Technics.

LAUREN: Your song ‘I Know U See Me’ is receiving a strong listener response on radio. What was your initial reaction when you first heard is played?
LB DAT: We made it!

LAUREN: What was the inspiration behind your debut radio single?
LB DAT: I was asked to perform at a club with only two days notice. I felt I didn't have the right material on hand to pump the party up to where I needed to keep it Lit. So I reached out to my official sure shot producer Shogunz Macadotious from Corner Blox music group for a banger. I shouldn't have to tell you the show was a success despite the short notice.

LAUREN: Would you say that the mood of your other songs is in the same vein as your debut radio single?
LB DAT: Not so much. I'm pretty diverse.

LAUREN: How would you characterize yourself as an artist?
LB DAT: I'm striving to be it all. I want to reach the masses. It's in the consumer how they perceive a song at the end of the day.

LAUREN: Did you come from a musical background? Are there other musicians in your family?
LB DAT: Well my brother used to DJ for a group growing up so I was always around music. My sister attempted to play the flute for a little while in school. I guess I learned what notes not to hit from her. I'm glad she put it down. My eardrums were about to bust! lol

LAUREN: What do you find most rewarding about being a musician? What do you find most challenging?
LB DAT: I find the fans coming out to support is rewarding. And finding the people to just stop and notice you for your craft is most challenging.

LAUREN: Who are your role models in music?
LB DAT: My role model would be someone like T.I., Jay-Z, Puff , Fifty, Ross etc. when it comes to this music business.

LAUREN: Describe your best or most memorable performance.
LB DAT: When I performed in New York at Club Amazura in Queens alongside K. Michelle from Love N Hip Hop and Mac Wilds from the HBO series 'The Wire'.

LAUREN: Do you have a music video for your hit single? If so, what can you tell us about it?
LB DAT: Not at the moment. I want to make it special.

LAUREN: What advice would you give to young, aspiring musicians out there who are unsure and need guidance?
LB DAT: Keep making new material. Doors may be closed in your face but don't get discouraged. As long as you keep pushing, doors will begin to open. Look at me! Most important. Don't quit your day job… lol

LAUREN: What's next for you as an artist? Is there a new single in the works? If so, what can you tell us about it?
LB DAT: What's next for LB Dat is ‘Make It Last’ which is my next single out on spotify. The video can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXaADPtlLGw. Support the movement and get me to a town near you.

LAUREN: Thank you LB Dat for your time. I wish you continued success and good luck!
